Hunger games: New insights into the brain control of hunger

The British Society of Neuroendocrinology Plenary Lecture

11:50-12:50, Wednesday 17th April - The CCD Auditorium

Professor Lora Heisler is a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow based at the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health at the University of Aberdeen. Her research looks at the mechanisms underlying the development of obesity and diabetes in a effort to identify new therapeutic interventions.

The brain represents the master coordinator of appetite and energy expenditure, employing interwoven neurological circuits to continually appraise and respond to changes in energy state. Lora's research aims to discover and characterise these brain circuits using cutting edge technology with the objective of locating points within the pathway that are amenable to manipulation with manmade (drug) or natural (hormone) substances.

Lora also examines the impact of diet and body weight on circuit rewiring and mechanisms restore appropriate system connectivity and activity.  The ultimate aim of Lora's research is to identify new treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The British Society for Neuroendocrinology (BSN)

BSN is a scientific society that exists to promote research and learning into the interplay between the endocrine and nervous systems that control so many important body processes.

The ultimate aim of this research is to provide therapies for the many neuroendocrine diseases and disorders that may develop throughout the life, course, and to develop methods to beneficially regulate normal neuroendocrine function in man and animals.

The origins of the Society date back to 1985, and it has published the international 'Journal of Neuroendocrinology' for over 20 years. Annual meetings are held either stand alone or jointly with European or UK societies with similar interests. Read more at the BSN website.
